Today we went to the beach with Slava and Vicki to watch Kiril play in a beach football
(soccer) tournament. At one point Kiril came over and pointed out that one of the
players was Arturs Irbe the NHL goalie. I went over and introduced myself and we had
                     a conversation about:

The lockout: He was one of the NHLPA player participants. He was concerned that some
of the players were working for the owners and did not negotiate with the unions best
interest at heart. He felt that the players were impatient and would have done better
if they had just played in europe or stayed with their families.

Tod Bertuzzi: Definately a hot head but everyone new that Steve Moore had it coming.
Moore could have just stood up for himself then none of this would have
happened. It is very questionable wheather Steve has his or hockey's best interests
at heart. There is no doubt that the game has suffered.

The weather in Jurmala and Riga has been extrodinary. Everyone we meet
tells us how lucky we are to be living in Jurmala on this, one of the finest summers
on record. Earth to weather gods... we are very greatful.

Here are some of the camera phone pictures I have taken in attempt to
   capture our good times.

One day we went to the beach with the Dubovisky's. Vicki and Olivia swam and swam
and finally they build one sand castle each. Both had a moat and a swimming pool.
Vicki's had a feather flag and Olivia's had a diving board. We are talking about real
kids stuff here folks. These are the days that makes me think that I want to be a
kid again. I think tomorrow I am going to build my own sand castle with a flag and
a moat and a bell and a... and tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow (W. Shakespear)

Vicki and Olivia crouch down for a photo with their castles. The tide is coming in
               and they won't last long.

Nevermind the tide, incomes Vicki the magnificent quickly followed by Olivia the great
to do the job of the tide. Before the tide. Yes, the castle met a quick and dirty
fate, crushed to smithereens by enormous feet.

After the beach we went to the Majori fun park. This little carnival is near the beach
with bumper cars and other attractions. Here Alex does his strong man imitation as
he winds up to ring the bell.

Alex brings down the hammer like a project manager that is two weeks late (bring down
the hammer, work with me here folks). And of course the bell responds like a programmer
full of two week old pizza. Not exactly the resounding sound of success.

Alex laughs as dad tries his hand at ringing the bell. And, like a seasoned programmer
working with new technology, he is no better than the guy with the two week old pizza.
As Nelson on the Simpsons would say, "Aha!"

It seems that almost every time we go passed the carnival Olivia jumps on the trampoline
with guide ropes and takes instruction from her proud father about how to do a back
flip. Well, look here folks, she can do it!

               Olivia
               does back flips.avi (2.25 MB)

After one extremely find day on the beach Denis, his son Vincent, Dan, his wife Marina,
his son Earnest, daugher Eve, Kiril (finally got the spelling right), his wife Veronica,
and two kids thomas and (still can't even try to spell this one) their other son (appologies)
got together for a beach day and then a sea-side dinner. It was a truely awesome day.
The water at 10PM was still 24 degrees celcius. After a wonderful meal we walked home
on the beach back to Dubulti. Olivia swam as we walked. Marianne and I fell in love
again and again walking hand in hand. This is the real thing.

Here is a shot of Thomas's tricycle sitting on the beach at 11PM. The kids all decided
to go for a swim. There are still many people on the beach and the water is great.
It is very hard to resist getting wet.

Vancouver: Vancouver loved Archie and Archie loved Vancouver. He has a lot of admiration
and respect for the fans of Vancouver who always treated him well. He asked me to
say hi to Vancouver for him. This is a big job but I will try my best....HELLO VANCOUVER....

   <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />I
just finished reading 'Theft, A Love Story' by Peter Carey an Australian novelist
writing a distinctly Australian novel about the artist he invented Butcher Bones
and the elaborate love letters he receives from Marlene Cook, his true love. Like
‘Bliss' his first novel, the focus of this novel is the many ways we can express love.
True love it seems can be hidden in everything, in every day actions, in life, in
death, murder and deceit. Brooding on this I am given to thinking about how I express
my love. What is my 'Love Letter, Love Letter' as

      Nick
      Cave
   <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
   puts it?

   As
many of you may know I proposed to Marianne by composing a song that ended in a question.
I played that song for her for the first time in a hotel room in

      Portugal

eleven years ago. Now, each time I begin to strum the chords and hum the tune it elicits
a smile and softness between us. I think that is what Peter Carey is on about. We
all need to express our true love. No matter the form. For this is where the beauty
of living is for all of us.

   This
is not a simple or forgettable message. I need to learn it well. But maybe it can
not be learned. It must be felt, deep down at the roots. So listen up and dig deep
into Mister Carey's work and your soul. Because this is a very @#&!ing big deal
   that you best not miss.

   'How
do you know what to pay if you don't know what it is worth?'

   I
imagine that in the mind's eye of each person I passed on the street today as
I smiled my dumb little North American smile was, 'What is with this slow dumb @#&!.
Do I know him? Has he nothing to complain about? Will he ever wake up and realize
   the suffering around him?'

   <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

   In
fact my smiling seems to put people off. They are thinking, 'Is he a con man, a thief,
a salesman, or just stupid?' Then it is announced that I am a Canadian and all is
understood and forgiven. You see it is apparently normal for North Americans to wear
a stupid grin that is rarely understood and always rouses suspicion.

   <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Well,
Europeans should understand that there is a subtly to the smiles they are receiving.
Like the vast array of vodka lining the store shelves in every super market, all of
which appear to be the same clear potent liquid, our smiles have the same subtly.
When we gaze at the store clerk and smile we are not necessarily satisfied. We may
be wry, or condescending, or suspicious, or, heaven forbid, happy. You see the same
   way we in

find it so difficult to understand the depth of the joy in 'Russian sadness'. Russians,
and Europeans in general, seem to be oblivious to the 'Art of Smiling'. Rather
than wear a smirk everywhere we walk, seemingly in fear of showing some form of positive
emotion, we wear a smile. Do not be fooled. All vodka is not created equal.

   Ligo was great!
Zanna and Denis found babysitting for Mira and made their way Jurmala. Along the way
it occurred to Denis to contact an old school mate Carel who lived in Jurmala. He
was having a Ligo party and we were set. Initially we thought we would leave Alex
to baby-sit Olivia but then we discovered that Carel had a daughter. Olivia was in
like Flin. Alex on the other hand was deep into an online game of Dragonshard and
   we content to play on his own.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

   <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />We
arrive to a clearing sky after a rainy day. Carel and his wife Veronica were preparing
'shashlik' (shish kebab) and we were off. After a few shooters of Ukrainian pepper
and honey vodka one of Carel's neighbours, a real character, Zed arrived. Zed spoke
little English but could speak in a Scottish accent. In addition he had this amazing
Haida tattoo of a bear on his arm. This was special. Here we were in
   Latvia
and we come across the indigenous art of the Queen Charlotte Islands on the west coast
   of
   British Columbia
   ,

      Canada

   .

   Finally when we
were thoroughly watered and feed we ventured down to the beach to check out the Ligo
   festival.

   There was much
hooting and hollering and finally we came across an essential ingredient to the Ligo
fire jumping ritual, an illegal bonfire.

   Legend has it that
if you can jump over the bonfire three times it will bring good luck. Now you can
see by the size of the bonfire this was not for the faint of heart. But as usual the
   ‘Dangerfield’* of the group
   Denis Gorshkov
, man with broken leg, began running at the fire screaming like a madman. Up into
the air he hurled himself across the fire and safely to the other side. That man is
   lucky, I think.

   Next I realized
that I was having some real problems with some tough bugs on the Active Networks project
and felt that this ritual may just give me the boost I needed. My job depended on
   it.

   Back and forth
I repeated ran jumping over the fire. One, two, three the crowd of on lookers counted.

   Then the ever fearless
Olivia broke rank. To the sound of her mothers ‘noooooooooooooo’ Olivia jump just
to the other side of the fire. Well done. I hope we get lucky!
>

June 23 and 24th is Ligo [Summer Solstice] the most anticipated celebration
in Latvia. Friday is a national stat holiday with a day off for all to enjoy all night
drinking parties. Ligo [also known as Jani] is an ancient pagan fertility festival
marking the longest day of the year. I always thought that was June 21st. Its customary
to spend Ligo in the forest so the city centre empties as cars decorated with oak
leaves head for the countryside laden with beer and food. Rural hosts greet
their arrivals with a song and the festivities begin when the guests sing a song in
               return.

During the course of the evening much beer
is consumed [many special brews made just for this occasion], carraway seed cheese
is the appropriate food [not sure the reason for this] Bonfires are lit and
revellers jump over the bonfire three times for good luck, but with the amount
of drinking going on it seems a dangerous custom to me. Young couples are encouraged
to forage through the forest to look for the fabled fern flower that only blooms on
Ligo. As ferns dont flower its a charming euphemism for the fertility part of
the festival. The Latvian people spend the week before the festival making wreaths
to wear on their heads as well as for decoration. Women use at least 27 different
plants, each plant symbolises a virtue she wants the coming year. Men
just use oak leaves for their wreaths which are believed to give strength and protect
      against bad energy. /FONT>

Ligo is a Bacchanalian anything goes party
with unbridled merry making. Last weekend at a dinner party I was informed by
a fellow that everything and anything is permitted during Ligo "adultery is even permitted
during Ligo" he said with a sly grin. I now remember the word Ligo and how its pronounced

Rural hosts greet
their arrivals with a song and the festivities begin when the guests sing a song in
            return.

During the course of the evening much beer is
consumed [many special brews made just for this occasion], carraway seed cheese is
the appropriate food [not sure the reason for this] Bonfires are lit and revellers
jump over the bonfire three times for good luck, but with the amount of drinking
going on it seems a dangerous custom to me. Young couples are encouraged to forage
through the forest to look for the fabled fern flower that only blooms on Ligo.
As ferns dont flower its a charming euphemism for the fertility part of the festival.
The Latvian people spend the week before the festival making wreaths to wear on their
heads as well as for decoration. Women use at least 27 different plants, each
plant symbolises a virtue she wants the coming year. Men just use oak
leaves for their wreaths which are believed to give strength and protect against bad
   energy. /FONT>

Ligo is a Bacchanalian anything goes party with
unbridled merry making. Last weekend at a dinner party I was informed by a fellow
that everything and anything is permitted during Ligo "adultery is even permitted
during Ligo" he said with a sly grin. I now remember the word Ligo and how its pronounced
[Legal] because everything is legal during Ligo.

   So there we
were my blessed little daughter, my protector, and me enjoying the sunshine of a warm
noon day on the Marori esplanade when my daughter spotted what she loved, a dog! It
was a tiny Yorkshire terrier nestled in the arms of a young boy. The boy was sitting
at a table alone at a busy outdoor restaurant. Olivia approached and began making
every petting motion and gesture imaginable desperately trying to intimate that she
wanted to pet the little canine. But the boy just stared back with his big blue eyes
and continued to do what my daughter so wanted to, pet the dog.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

   It was at this
time that I, the interlocutor, decided to call Slava for a quick little Russian lesson.

             "Slava,"
I asked. "How do I say? Can I pet your dog?" After some minutes of Slava slowly and
patiently repeating the simple phonemes I think I got it.

             "Po
gla dit. Po gla dit." I repeated into my cell phone until Slava was satisfied that
I could be understood. Ok, I thought to myself now it is time for action. I walked
to the table opposite the boy surrounded by four adults whom I ASSUMED to be the boy's
parents. I approached the large balding man closest to the boy and began my career
   as a failed Russian translator.

             "Po
gla dit. Po gla dit," I inquired. The man’s eyes became big and round and with out
a moments hesitation he began uttering something in disgust.

      "Obviously
we have a little misunderstanding here," I responded (in english). Something a real
translator would have no troubles ironing out. But I in my fledging translator state
did not understand. And I might add, neither did he!

             <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Now
I may not be the coolest bottle in the

      Russia

vodka chiller but when I looked up I noticed that the boy's mother had arrived at
the table next to us with a treat for her child. Olivia was now petting the dog and
I was coming to the realization that there is a lot of homophobia in

      Latvia

. Wow, this guy really had the wrong idea. He stood up puffing his chest and I retreated
quickly and summoned my protector, the mighty, cuddly, Olivia. I stood behind her
hoping that obviously a parent of this beautiful child could not have meant what this
   man thought I meant.

             "Can
I pet your dog?" No you can't pet my @#&!ing DOG! What dog? You fool! I later
discovered that "Po gla dit" has many subtle meanings, none of them manly; to caress
for example. “May I caress your dog?” Ok this is not good.

   So
let this be a lesson to you. Always travel with a translator or more importantly.
A protector, thanks Olivia, you saved my skin on this one.

   installment of Baltic Humor.

Baltic Summer: Two Latvia office workers are gathered
around the water cooler talking. One asks the other, "How was your summer?" The other
replies, "Oh, not so good, I had to work that day."

To hell with it: There is this Latvia guy who is not
very content with his life. Just not exciting enough. "To hell with it", he thinks
and attempts summon the devil. To his suprise up pops the devil. He explains the he
is just not content with his boring existance. The devil offers to send him to hell
for a day. The man thinks about it and says, "Sure." He is transported to hell where
he is thoroughly entertained with parties teaming with sex, drugs, and rock'n roll.
Needless to say he has a great time. He comes back and is content with his life for
a few weeks but soon his discontentment and boredom grow again and he summons
the devil for a second time. "Please, I would like to take another trip down
to hell, can you send me there again?" The devil thinks for a moment and then agrees.
The second trip is even more glorious than the first, full to the brim with drunken
debauchery and excess. Upon his return he feels great. He really feels alive and this
time he is content for a longer period but eventually he grows bored again and summons
the devil for a third time. This time when he asks the devil to send him down to hell
for a day trip the devil replies, "I am sorry but this is not a place you can just
visit. This time you will have to decide whether you want to live there permanently."
Hmm, the man thinks for sometime, and eventual decides to go.

A week later the devil checks in on the man and finds him screaming,
boiling in a pot filled with his own blood. "How could you do this to me! This is
   not what I expected."

"Well", the devil responds, "what you experience before was tourism,
   this is immigration."
